Trial News:

PPROMT would like to welcome Monash Medical Centre and a warm welcome to Joanne Mockler, the research Midwife, and Euan Wallace, the PI.  The centre has been very successful as they have already recruited 3 participants.  Award for Best New Centre!!

This week Gosford and Port Macquarie were inducted into the trial.  Welcome to Dr John Palmer and Dr Tanya Nippita at Gosford and Dr Stephano Kim and Dr Olivia Stewart at Port Macquarie.  It’s great to be expanding the Aussie network!

ACTORDS: The ACTORDS two year follow-up results have been published in The New England Journal of Medicine [N Engl J Med 2007; 357:1179-89]. Professor Caroline Crowther and colleagues would like to thank again those involved for being such an important part of the ACTORDS Study Group and making the trial and follow-up happen. Likewise a special thank you for all the work and support you gave to the trial, the two year follow-up, and, for those of you still involved in the 6-8 year follow-up study, thanks for the work you continue to do.

The summary conclusion from the New England Journal of Medicine paper is that "Exposure to one or more repeat doses of antenatal betamethasone has previously been shown to reduce the risk of respiratory distress syndrome and overall serious neonatal morbidity. The current report shows that this treatment does not change survival free of major neurosensory disability or growth to two years of age. On the basis of this evidence, clinicians may wish to consider the use of a single injection of Celestone Chronodose, or equivalent, repeated weekly if the woman remains at risk or very preterm birth seven or more days after an initial course of antenatal corticosteroids."
