REPORT OF A WOMBAT MEETING

Data Monitoring Committees Workshop

In Melbourne on November 21 we held a one day workshop on Data Monitoring Committees (DMCs).
The workshops aimed to build perinatal research capacity by increasing the number of people in Australia with the skills needed to sit as a member of a DMC. Participants examined the role of the DMC within a trial and discussed issues such as whether every trial needs a DMC and what differences there may be between DMCs and Safety Monitoring Committees. A number of different approaches to handling this aspect of trial management were identified and all appear to be working in Australia. It was clear from reviewing the international expertise on this issue that there is no consensus. As a result of the workshop WOMBAT has undertaken to develop a DMC Charter based on a similar model in the UK and seek to have it endorsed by the perinatal community. We have also established a register of people who are willing to sit on DMCs and will create a mentorship program for those who are interesting in being a DMC member but feel they require additional training and support.

If you are interesting in putting your name on the DMC Register or know of someone who you believe would be suitable please contact Philippa Middleton WOMBAT National Coordinator (philippa.middleton@adelaide.edu.au)

Powerpoint presentations from the workshop and a useful reading list will be available on the WOMBAT website soon.

Open for recruitment

ASTEROID

Not yet recruiting women, but this large multicentre trial comparing two different sorts of antenatal steroids is now 'recruiting' centres. Ten or more centres have already received their ethics approvals or are currently progressing through ethics. The first women are likely to be recruited to the trial in early 2009. More centres are still required. Please contact Pat Ashwood (pat.ashwood@adelaide.edu.au) if you would like to discuss the possibility of becoming a centre. The trial has been submitted to ANZCTR and a number is expected shortly.
