RECENT PSANZ CONGRESS
650 participants enjoyed the recent 14th Annual, PSANZ Congress. Attendees came from multidisciplinary fields of perinatal care, including: scientists, obstetricians, midwives, neonatologists, neonatal nurses and epidemiologists.
The theme for the Congress this year was Specialties working together to ensure optimal long term outcomes. There was a focus on the manner in which early perinatal influences can have implications for these outcomes.

ITEM OF INTEREST
How an idea became an RCT: Participation in a WOMBAT Protocol Development Workshop
From an idea to a PhD – The Journey:
Persistent occipito-posterior position: Outcomes following manual rotation
(the POP-OUT study)
My PhD journey started when attending a WOMBAT protocol development workshop in September 2007. We needed to come up with an idea for a study to explore the association between occipito-posterior positioning (OP) of a baby during the second stage of labour on delivery outcomes and methods for improving delivery outcomes was a topic that interested us strongly
The WOMBAT workshop facilitators invited us to present our Protocol as a work in progress at the IMPACT workshop the following day. This presentation generated much discussion and inspired myself and colleagues, to seriously consider undertaking a randomised controlled trial. As the design of the study was evolving, the idea of taking on the study for my doctoral studies had been niggling at me until I finally realized that the time was right for me to proceed with a PhD.
The aim of my PhD is to explore methods for increasing the normal vaginal delivery rate in pregnancies affected by OP positioning during the second stage of labour. Caesarean section and instrumental delivery (operative delivery) are associated with significant maternal morbidity. Rotational procedures have long been used, but are not routinely practised by many health professionals.
The methods will include a:
1. Survey obstetricians in Australia and New Zealand to determine current obstetric practice
2. Cochrane Systematic Review on rotational procedures used in labour for reducing operative delivery
3. RCT to investigate the effect of manual rotation in second stage of labour versus routine practice on the incidence in operative delivery (caesar
ean section or instrumental delivery) for babies lying in an occipito-posterior position during the second stage of labour
To date, the thesis topic has been accepted by the University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine and supervisors for my thesis have also been organised.
Recently I was awarded the Dr. Albert McKern Scholarship through the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology which will help me enormously in undertaking the study.
The excitement I feel with my journey so far has been amazing. For me it’s been a dream come true! My advice to anyone contemplating undertaking a PhD is that “nothing is impossible and where there is a will there is a way!”
